1985 ‘Diamonds in the Mine’ verse variations in 2016 ‘Treaty’

Bev (B4real on leonardcohenforum.com) has first discovered 2 verse variation in the 1985 tour within the song ‘Diamonds in the Mine’ that reappear (slightly changed) in the song ‘Treaty’, from the album You Want it Darker. Some time later I also discovered this independently, thinking I was the first. Anyhow, I was able to lay my hands on some recordings from this tour in order to offer you the proof.

The versie variation in ‘Diamonds in the Mine’:

I see you changed the water all into wine
That was a pretty trick to do
I sit at your table every night
Baby I just can’t get drunk with you.

I haven’t said a word since you’ve been gone
That any liar couldn’t say as well
I just can’t believe the static coming on
You were my ground
You were my aerial

The verses in ‘Treaty’:

I’ve seen you change the water into wine
I’ve seen you change it back to water too
I sit at your table every night
I try but I just don’t get high with you

I haven’t said a word since you’ve been gone
That any liar couldn’t say as well
I just can’t believe the static coming on
You were my ground, my safe and sound
You were my aerial

Leonard Cohen – The Partisan (Brussels, 30th June 2013)

On the 30th of June 2013 Leonard Cohen played ‘The Partisan’ in Vorst Nationaal, Brussels.

This moment was caught on camera by four youtubers: Albertnoonan, Wirebirds, MadLennyFan and Gianluca Epirotti (Many thanks go to them). I thought the video of MadLennyFan was wonderful, because it’s filmed so close, it’s only a pity that he didn’t get the whole song. So I decided to make a music video using the images the others shot too and this is the result.

For best results put it in HD. I hope you enjoy!

Third time lucky, even for Leonard Cohen

March 30, 2013

The Louisville Palace
Louisville, Kentucky

After a beautiful show so far, Leonard Cohen starts ‘Closing time’, but right after starting the song he gets the lyrics wrong. He stops the song and tells the audience:

I screwed up the words and I’d like to start again

He starts again but makes the exact same fault. Once again he stops the music saying:

Please forgive me friends, but some things have to be done right

With a little help from the audience he manages to get it right the third time.

You can listen to the recording at the  bottom of this post.
